Blow Drying: <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">My hair is thick and curly and when I wash it I <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">blow dry it fairly straight the night before and then plait it so it doesn't get untidy over night - so that it isn't too soft to do a Vintage Style in the morning

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Curling Wand: I use a small curling wand to curl my hair it is about half an inch in diameter. Mostly I set my hair with hot rollers - but when I just want a quick Vintage style I use a curling wand.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Setting Lotion: Even when I curl my hair with a curling wand I separate my hair and pick up the section that I wish to curl and comb it so there are no knots and then spray it with The Lindy Charm School Essential Setting Lotion then roll it up into the curling wand to create the curl and then once the curl is ready I slide it off the wand and put a small alligator clip in it so that it can set like Pin Curls.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Cooling the Curls: I think it is important to cool the curls so that it makes it easier for you to do your style and it stays easier without using alot of hair spray.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Teasing your Curls: When I tease my curls before rolling into the barrel roll - I spray the base of my curl with Cedel Hair Spray (the green can) and then tease it - not too much with a fine tooth comb - if you have finer hair you may have to tease it more.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Smoothing the Barrel Roll: I smooth the barrel roll prior to rolling with a small paddle (smoothing brush - you can see it in my previous blog) brush and then I take a small amount of Brylcreme and run that lightly up the smooth side of your barrel roll to tame any initial flyaways.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Creating the Barrel Roll: I actually do this just like I do a Victory roll by wrapping it around a couple of my fingers on the hand on the opposite side to the side that I am working on and I wrap it around towards the hand. So if I am doing my roll on my left side I use my right hand and wrap it to the right. Once I have wrapped it around my fingers a couple of times I then roll it down toward my head and then twist it to the front and pin it in the centre - catching the tail of the hair on the inside of the roll with the first bobby pin.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Smoothing the Barrel Roll: I then take a small amount of Brylcreme and rub it on the teeth of a fine tooth comb and then slide this comb up the side of your roll to flatten any flyaways.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Hairspray: I would then spray the roll again with The Cedel Hair Spray (green can) then run my small smoothing(teasing brush) up the roll to again smooth the flyaways.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Final Hairspray: I then spray the roll and give a little squirt in the tunnel of the roll also with Cedel Hair Spray (pink can) to hold it.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Holding the Bandana secure: I actually use some of my pretty hairclips to secure my bandana at the sides and sometimes I also use a flower.

Blow Drying: Mostly I dry set my hair the next day after I have blow dried it fairly straight the night before and then plaited it so it doesn't get untidy over night.

Straightening: Occasionally Mr Noel (my beautiful fiance) will use a Straightening iron on my hair after blow drying - as I find that this gets my hair nice and smooth and therefore I have less fly aways in my final style. I always use a Moroccan oil to help to keep my dry hair conditioned.

Hot Rollers: I mainly use my hot rollers to do my
dry sets for Vintage curls. I have the beautiful rollers with the velvet on the
body of them so that they do not get tangled in my curly hair. I also use Perm Papers to control and protect the ends of my hair when I use my hot rollers.

Vintage Pin Curls: Occasionally I will do traditional
vintage pin curls using my dolly peg to roll them and using these alligator
clips to hold them in place. I would of course then leave these to set
overnight or most of the day before styling.

Curling Wand: I use a curling wand when I am doing a quick style (usually only the front of my hair) because with my long hair it becomes difficult to get all the areas of my hair properly. But I find that a curling wand makes your hair smoother and the curls firmer.

Setting Lotion: I always use a Setting Lotion whether I am using hot rollers, doing traditional Pin Curls or using a Curling wand. I use the Lindy's Charm School for Girls Essential Setting Lotion - which you can purchase through me for AUD$25 + Postage.

Cooling Your Curls: I always curl my hair with heated styling equipment prior to doing my make up as this allows my curls time to cool properly and like Miss Cherry mentions your curls will be much better if you can give them this time.

This is a wonderful set of hot rollers - they actually have velvet rollers and they don't get stuck in my hair. They have the normal hot roller pins as well as alligator style clips - which are wonderful for my long thick hair.
The blue long alligator clips on the left are used to section my hair for setting and for styling. There are medium sized bobby pins shown on the bottom left hand side - you need to get the colour closest to your hair colour - I use light brown/blonde ones on my reddy coloured hair. The wooden clothes dolly peg I use for doing old skool pin curls.
The purple brush is like a lifesaver for me it is a Freestyle detangler brush - it has soft bristles - but it detangles without pulling your hair out. You can even use it on wet hair - my hairdresser told me this). The middle brush is a stiff bristle brush that I use to brush out hair spray. The brush on the right hand side is a soft smoothing brush that I use to smooth the fly a ways on my curls before doing my victory rolls.
I use old skool hairspray - I have found that the lacquers are too hard on my hair and actually cause my hair to snap like a twig. I use the Green Firm Cedel hairspray to tease my hair and smooth the initial fly a ways. I use the Pink Extra Firm Cedel hairspray as a finishing spray. The centre container is Brylcreem (as you can see it is well worn) - I use this to smooth fly a ways on my victory rolls etc - it also conditions your hair - I use this as a pomade.
